What Is Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)?
Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a non-hazardous solution made of 32.5% high-purity urea (AUS 32) and 67.5% deionized water. It’s a key component in all modern diesel vehicles and heavy equipment using Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology. When injected into the exhaust stream, DEF helps convert harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions into harmless water vapor and nitrogen gas.
DEF is not used in gasoline engines, aircraft, or small diesel engines.
Usage & Efficiency
On average, DEF is consumed at a rate of 2–3% of diesel fuel usage—roughly a 50:1 ratio. However, some heavy-duty equipment may use it at higher rates. Despite its critical function, DEF is environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and not classified as hazardous by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
DEF & TransFueler Equipment
With the growing demand for DEF across new diesel platforms, TransFueler offers optional DEF systems integrated into our diesel fuel trailers to support on-site refueling needs.
Quality Matters
TransFueler uses only ISO 22241-compliant components to ensure DEF purity and system protection. DEF must be stored, handled, and transported using approved materials and equipment to prevent contamination, which can damage costly SCR systems.
Refer to ISO 22241 Part 3 for DEF handling, transport, and storage standards, and Part 4 for guidelines on refilling interface specifications.
